Alost British submarine has been found in the Aegean Sea. HMS Trooper struck a mine on 7 October 1943, causing what has been described as an ‘immediate and rapid sinking.’

All 64 men and officers on board lost their lives, just days after Trooper had landed three secret agents and valuable cargo on the Greek island of Euboea.

The submarine was patrolling the area between the islands of Naxos and Ikaria when she disappeared, following warnings of German naval operations in the area.

The find was made by Greek explorer Kostas Thoctarides and his research team. Trooper was located at a depth of 253m, north of the island of Donoussa, where a minefield had been laid by the German minelayer Drache in September 1943.

According to Thoctarides, the 84m-long Trooper is ‘broken into three distinct sections – bow, midships, and stern – which confirms a very violent sinking, due to a catastrophic mine explosion.’
