The Hill of Tara, once the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, is a site steeped in mythology and history, dating back over 5,000 years. At the centre of the image lies the Mound of the Hostages, an ancient passage tomb dating to the late Neolithic period. The landscape surrounding this monument has been shaped by millennia of use, leaving it scattered with earthworks representing ancient ring forts, burial mounds, halls, and palaces. In this aerial view, the rich green fields that stretch out toward the horizon are a reminder of Ireland’s fertile lands and the deep-rooted connection between its people, its lore, and the land itself. The Hill of Tara stands not only as a historical landmark, but also as a symbol of Ireland’s mythical past.

This image was chosen as the winner of the CWA Photo of the Year 2025 Competition (sponsored by Hidden History). You can see the runners-up here.
