The Tomb of Fu Hao was unearthed at Yinxu, the site of the final capital of the Shang dynasty, in present-day Anyang, China. The discovery was made by Zheng Zhenxiang in 1976 and excavated by a team from the Archaeological Institute of the Chinese Academy. They revealed a small but well-preserved royal Shang tomb, containing a wealth of objects including bronze vessels bearing the name of Fu Hao, who is known from references on oracle bones to be a military leader and consort of King Wu Ding (r. c.1200 BC). The thousands of other treasures in the tomb included artefacts of jade, bone, stone, pottery, and ivory. Also found were the remains of 16 people and several dogs, believed to be sacrificial victims. After extensive restoration, the tomb was opened to the public in 1999. It remains the only Shang royal tomb found with all its contents intact and excavated scientifically by archaeologists.

Technology + archaeology: The Ara reveals itself

An immersive multimedia experience is bringing new life to the Ara Pacis Augustae, the monument built in honour of Augustus’ return to Rome in 13 BC. L’Ara si revela uses video mapping technology to project colours and details on to the marble, showing different stages in the altar’s history, from its origins in the Augustan period through to its rediscovery, excavation, and restoration. The choice of colours is based on lab analysis, comparisons with Roman paintings, and research on other Greco-Roman architecture and sculpture; a reinterpretation of the plant frieze was informed by a 2010 study that identified 50 real plant species. The visual journey is accompanied by narration, music, and sound effects. Find out more at http://www.arapacis.it/mostra-evento/l-ara-si-rivela
