The London Shipwreck: her final voyage

This new exhibition at Southend Museums focuses on the conservation work and ongoing scientific and academic research that have taken place to draw out the secrets of the objects recovered from the wreck of the London (see CA 308). On display are a large number of never-before-seen objects, including personal items and navigational tools, as well as the star find: a rare timber gun carriage that would have held a cannon on the 17th-century warship. Tickets cost £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Essex Record Office presents this lecture by Adam Wightman, Director of Archaeology at Colchester Archaeological Trust. Archaeological investigations at the Essex County Hospital site have been ongoing for the past five years, revealing a complex Roman site with evidence of burial, occupation, and industry. To-date, over 150 burials have been excavated, including fascinating animal burials, ‘deviant’ burials, and high-status burials with spectacular grave goods. Tickets cost £6.50.
