This course is suitable for all levels from beginners to experienced diggers, and includes a mixture of classroom sessions and hands-on training. Cerne Abbey Research Project, Cerne Abbas, 14 July-9 August (four separate 6-day sessions)
Cerne Abbey lies at the feet of the famous hill-figure of a club-wielding naked giant. Its precise location was lost until geophysical survey undertaken by the University of Sheffield located its surprisingly well preserved layout. In 2023, excavations started to reveal parts of the cloister, west range, and the north aisle of the monastic church. The dig this year will explore the church and suspected infirmary area. All training is provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Under-18s are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

King’s Park Fort, Stirling, 6-16 August
The oldest and best-preserved royal park in Scotland, King’s Park surrounds Stirling Castle – but it is home to a wealth of much earlier remains as well. This excavation is part of a wider project exploring late prehistoric settlement patterns in the Forth Valley, and how Iron Age communities interacted with the Roman conquest. It will also investigate a previously unknown Bronze Age burial cairn that was identified last year.
