REVIEW BY ROGER FORSHAW

Nigel Fletcher-Jones’ Ancient Egypt: a photographic history offers a visual overview of more than 3,000 years of Egyptian civilisation. With 200 well-presented photographs, the book provides a chronological record that spans from Egypt’s earliest beginnings to the complexities of the Graeco-Roman era. The volume begins with a short introduction that leads into an exploration of the nation’s prehistoric roots, before advancing through the successive dynastic periods.

Each chapter provides context for the images, offering insights into Egypt’s formation and important historical events. The early sections highlight milestones such as the Narmer Palette, widely regarded as a symbol of Egypt’s unification and one of the earliest examples of historical documentation. As the narrative progresses, the book traces the major phases of Egyptian history, covering developments from the Old Kingdom through the Intermediate Periods and into later dynasties, while noting the cultural and historical importance of monuments, artefacts, and key figures.

The discussion of critical events is straightforward and informative. It covers episodes such as the political fragmentation during the First Intermediate Period, the achievements of the Egyptian Empire in the New Kingdom, and the challenges posed by the Sea Peoples, which are vividly rendered in the reliefs at Medinet Habu (the mortuary temple of Ramesses III). The text also touches on the radical nature of the Amarna Period, the difficulties of the Third Intermediate Period, and the eventual reunification of Egypt under Psamtek I.

The volume strikes a balance between well-known icons and lesser-known treasures. While readers will encounter recognisable subjects such as the Meidum Geese, the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel, and Tutankhamun’s funerary mask, the book introduces less familiar artefacts as well. Among these are the nearly pristine stela of the Theban gatekeeper Mattati, the gold-leaf covered shabti of Wahneferhotep, and an exquisitely decorated gold headband from the Second Intermediate Period featuring depictions of gazelles, a stag, and celestial motifs.

Though not intended as an academic textbook, Ancient Egypt: a photographic history serves as a reference for both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts of Egypt’s past. Its logical progression, concise narratives, and informative captions create a vivid portrait of Egypt’s historical legacy, while the high-quality photographs further enhance the reader’s experience. This volume is a practical, visually engaging guide to one of history’s most noted civilisations.
