Construction has begun on a new home for a rare German U-boat from the Second World War.

The new Battle of the Atlantic U-boat Museum, which will house the vessel U-534, is expected to open in Birkenhead in 2026.

The submarine’s previous home near Merseytravel’s Woodside Ferry Terminal was forced to close in 2020 due to structural issues including water damage.

U-534 was used mainly for training duties during the war and sank no other ships. The sub was herself sunk in May 1945, after being intercepted by the RAF off the Danish coast.

After nearly 50 years under the sea, U-534 was salvaged in 1993 and meticulously cut into four pieces before being put on display on Merseyside.

She is one of only four U-boats in preserved condition remaining in the world, and will be the sole example on display in Britain.

The attraction, overseen by the Big Heritage community interest company, will include an education centre, café, and new public spaces for visitors.
