A rare felt hat from the Roman Period has gone on display for the first time at Bolton Museum, in the north-west of Britain, following conservation work. Dating to c.AD 200, the hat is thought to have belonged to a member of the Roman military, and appears to have been adapted to make it suitable for Egypt’s sunny and sandy conditions. This is one of only three hats known to survive from this period – one of which is in Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery, and the other in Florence in Italy.
