Analysis of the contents of a Ptolemaic Bes-shaped jug from the Tampa Museum of Art in Florida has revealed a complex concoction of fermented fruit, psychoactive plant-based substances, and human fluids that include breast milk, oral and vaginal fluids, and blood. The team, from the Universities of Trieste and Milan, believe the drink may have been prepared for rituals as part of the ‘Oracle of Bes’ at Abydos, causing hallucinations in order to induce prophetic dreams.

The contents of this Bes vase were found to include hallucinogenic plant-based substances and human bodily fluids.
