Restoring Boden Fogou
Volunteers from the Meneage Archaeology Group have restored part of a passageway in an Iron Age fogou, which was rediscovered near Boden in west Cornwall in 2003 (see CA 414 for more about excavations on the site since then). In order to return the entrance of the monument to its former glory, a fallen lintel stone was lifted by members of the group, assisted by landowner Chris Hosken. The restoration took place during excavations of the fogou and surrounding Bronze Age and Romano-British features, including a Bronze Age roundhouse. A short timelapse of the restoration of the lintel stone to its proper place can be viewed on the MAG website: http://www.meneagearchaeologygroup.org.

Southsea Coastal Scheme wins excellence award
The Sub-Frontage 1 section of the Southsea Coastal Scheme, a project aiming to monitor the installation of new sea defences and record any resulting finds or structures, has received the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coast Excellence Award in the Climate Resilient Places category. Among the finds was a revetment wall that appears to form part of the 18th-century sea defences. Experts from Wessex Archaeology assisted with consultancy, built heritage, geomatics, geoarchaeology, and fieldwork aspects of the project, which was conducted with Coastal Partners, Portsmouth City Council, VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster, Royal HaskoningDHV, and Idadesign, in conjunction with Historic England.
Roman fort discovered in Pembrokeshire
A previously unknown Roman fort has been discovered in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Dr Mark Merrony, Roman specialist and tutor at Oxford University, was alerted to the presence of the fort when he found a triangular piece of Roman roofing slate. Other such fragments had been found by a local farmer, some of which were stained with rust deposits and showed evidence of chiselling. The fort appears to have been extremely large, and is situated in a strategic position on sloping ground over an undisclosed river valley. Geophysics on the site is due to take place this month, and it is hoped that further features will be found.
