Current Archaeology’s May Listings: exhibitions, events, and heritage from home

There are lots of great archaeological and historical events and activities coming up over the next few months, including exhibitions, festivals, and conferences. Or, if you would prefer to get your heritage fix at home, there is plenty on offer as well, from virtual site tours and new digital resources to TV shows, podcasts, apps, and more. EXHIBITION

Ancient India: living traditions

The British Museum, London, 22 May-19 October

This new exhibition, opening soon at the British Museum, will bring together thousands of years of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious imagery. Drawing from the museum’s South Asian collection, with loans from partners around the world, the exhibition will feature over 180 objects, including 2,000-year-old sculptures, paintings, drawings, and manuscripts, in order to explore the origins of three major world religions through the emergence of early India’s sacred art. Early bird tickets start at £16, with discounts and concessions available.

Dorchester Walking Festival presents a programme of guided walks showcasing the beauty and heritage of Dorset. Many of the events offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in the area’s rich history, with walks exploring the story of Dorchester through the ages, the town’s military history, and the lives of its 17th-century residents, as well as others visiting the Iron Age hillfort of Maiden Castle, the ancient South Dorset Ridgeway, Poundbury Hillfort and Roman aqueduct, and more. Tickets can be booked in advance and range from free to £15.

Producers, Traders, and Consumers in Hampshire and Beyond

Southampton Archaeology Society presents this study day exploring themes from Roman, later Hampshire and beyond. Contributors will speak about Roman, Saxon, and medieval Southampton, Winchester, and sites further afield. It is based on a new book, Producers, Traders and Consumers in Urban Societies in Southern Britain and Europe, which is dedicated to Mark Brisbane, Emeritus Professor of Medieval Archaeology at Bournemouth University. Tickets cost £21 for SAS members, £25 for non-members, and £15 for students and under-18s.

Voices Waiting to be Heard? Notable women of Romano-British archaeology

Female archaeologists have been involved in Romano-British studies since the early days of the archaeological discipline and have played a significant, pioneering role. This event will put the spotlight on a few forgotten female trailblazers, touching on their roles in and contributions to research on Roman Britain. An accompanying exhibition will showcase the lives and work of 11 female scholars in the field. After the colloquium, the exhibition will be hosted at the Hellenic and Roman Library, Senate House. Entry to both the colloquium and exhibition is free; no registration is required.

Shining a Light on Roman Roadside Settlements in South-east England and Beyond

This conference, presented by the Surrey Archaeological Society’s Roman Studies Group in association with Sussex Archaeology and History, will examine Roman roadside settlements in south-east England and beyond. Speakers include Tony King (keynote talk: ‘On the road in the Western Roman Empire: ancient motels, caravanserai and emporia’), Mike Luke on Alfoldean, Chris Butler on Hassocks, and Matt Sparkes on Croydon.
