REVIEW BY KK
This book synthesises what is currently known about the Neolithic in Jersey, highlighting the fact that while our knowledge for some areas of the island and for some phases of the Neolithic is fairly extensive, for other regions and time periods evidence is still lacking.
Starting with a brief overview of the Mesolithic in the Channel Islands, the book then delves into the ‘Neolithisation’ of Jersey and the different theories of how this occurred, with the authors arguing for colonisation from mainland France, instead of indigenous Mesolithic groups adopting Neolithic practices through trade and other interactions. The middle of the book then heads firmly into the evidence, providing an in-depth overview of the middle Neolithic period in Jersey, for which there is much to talk about. The last chapter discusses the late Neolithic, which represents a distinct gap in evidence.
This is a well-researched, comprehensive account of the current state of play on the study of Neolithic Jersey and, importantly, provides a series of questions that the authors suggest future research should focus on.
