This new book from Pen & Sword is a most welcome one: many people are familiar with the Saxon Shore forts of east and south-east England, but there has not been a comprehensive guide to them published since Andrew Pearson’s of 2002, which itself built on Stephen Johnson’s of 1976. In the intervening years, there has been much additional research into some of the forts, producing archaeological and other data that is integrated into this comprehensive new assessment. The Cravens are excellent guides, providing both wider context for, and detailed explanation of, the major sites (Portchester, Pevensey, Dover, Richborough, Reculver, Bradwell, Burgh, Caister, and Brancaster), as well as interludes on related historic locations along the way. They write well, provide lots of useful information for visitors to these sites, and include plentiful photographs, maps, and other illustrations. I read this book with pleasure, and it is of use to any interested in these forts, especially those planning a visit.
