REVIEW BY DAMIAN SHIELS
This book takes as its focus the archaeological excavation of a remote mountain cave used as an IRA hideout in 1922, a location described by the authors as a ‘Civil War time capsule’. The project was an important one, as it represents the first dedicated research excavation ever conducted on an Irish revolutionary site. The results reveal the value – both to archaeologists and the public – of investigating the physical and artefactual remains of this period. Across 12 richly illustrated chapters, the authors share the fruits of their impressive multidisciplinary approach. In addition to excavation, they conducted landscape analysis, undertook detailed historical research, captured oral narratives, and assessed the site’s place in local memory. Tormore dugout and those associated with it are brought vividly to life and impressively located within the context of the Irish Civil War. This is an important book with broad appeal, and will prove particularly valuable to all those interested in the archaeology of 20th century irregular conflict.
