A team of excavators led by Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings on 4 November 1922. The young pharaoh ruled c.1334-1325 BC, in ancient Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty, but died aged just 19 years old. His early death was probably the reason for his burial in KV62, a tomb that was significantly smaller than other contemporary royal burials. Despite its size, Tutankhamun’s tomb was filled with many rich funerary goods, including the king’s mummy in its golden sarcophagus. The excavation and recording of the tomb’s contents took an international team of experts and Egyptian workers almost a decade, and the discovery sparked ‘Tut-mania’ around the world. The funerary goods, which were sent to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo on their discovery, will be placed on display in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza when construction is complete.
