This book draws together diverse excavations; geophysical, augering, and fieldwalking surveys; and other investigations carried out between 1991 and 2009 to help determine a location and explore design options for the Stonehenge Visitor Centre that opened in 2013 (see CA 288). Discoveries were equally varied, spanning Mesolithic finds to modern military features, with Bronze Age field-systems, a Romano-British building, and Anglo Saxon and medieval occupation in between – as well as an enigmatic, still undated enclosure.

Following a scene-setting introduction, Chapter 2 describes individual sites; Chapter 3 covers geoarchaeology; and Chapter 4 summarises the archaeology by period. Artefacts and environmental evidence feature in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 respectively, Chapter 7 examines radiocarbon dating, and Chapter 8 brings a closing discussion. Packed with detail, this is perhaps not for the casual reader, but it is an invaluable reference (with generous appendices and bibliography) for those keen to learn more about how the facilities came together, and what was found in the process.
