REVIEW BY KK
With more than 1,500 castles – a term that Andrew Powell-Thomas uses to cover everything from medieval military fortifications and tower houses to crenellated mansions and great estates – still standing in Scotland today, no book can hope to cover them all. Castles of Scotland selects just 50 of them, with Powell-Thomas choosing to highlight a mixture of the ones that are most famous, such as Edinburgh, Balmoral, and Stirling, and those that are a bit more obscure, such as Buchanan Castle near Loch Lomond and Innes Chonnel Castle on an island on Loch Awe.
Each entry provides a brief overview of the site, primarily discussing its history and architecture. For those looking for an in-depth history, this is not the book for you, but if you would like an introduction to the topic or are perhaps looking for inspiration for your next holiday, this book would be perfect. Richly illustrated, it captures the beauty of these buildings and makes for a colourful addition to the coffee table.
