REVIEW BY HEATHER BEETON
This report is a result of 11 seasons of extensive excavations of the multiperiod site at Mellor hilltop in Stockport, carried out by University of Manchester Archaeological Unit. Occupation started in the Mesolithic and continued in phases through to the medieval period, as evidenced by structural features and rich material culture. The ceramic assemblages from the later prehistoric and Romano-British phases are particularly notable.
The benefit of this report is that it is not limited to a north-west perspective. Instead, contributors look towards Derbyshire and Yorkshire, which centralises the site and broadens its context. Through this analysis it becomes clear occupants of the Mellor hilltop had social and economic interactions that stretched across central Britain from at least the time of the Iron Age. As such, it can confidently be suggested this is a site of regional significance.
This is an extremely well-illustrated and -presented publication, and would make a fine addition to any bookshelf in the region.
