REVIEW BY CH
This beautifully illustrated book highlights the vital work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme in documenting finds made by members of the public, and celebrates the remarkable artefacts and insights that have been brought to light through the cooperation of archaeologists and amateurs. Its contents offer a dazzling display of the fruits of this collaboration, showcasing more than 50 discoveries spanning prehistory to the present day, from world-famous finds to more obscure but no-less illuminating artefacts. Arranged by historical period, every entry examines what these finds add to our understanding of the past, but the process of their discovery also forms a key part of each story, emphasising how the finder and local Finds Liaison Officer worked together. The passion of both parties is palpable, not least in an extract from an email sent by an FLO after the first pieces of the Staffordshire Hoard emerged in 2009. It begins, simply, ‘WOW!!!!!!’.
