Fragments of figurines depicting Isis-Aphrodite, the first to be found at the ancient site of Oxyrhynchus.

The Spanish mission that is excavating a series of rock-cut tombs at the ancient site of Oxyrhynchus (el-Bahnasa, Minya) has discovered two more mummies with gold tongues, and several terracotta figures of Isis-Aphrodite – the first to be found in the area. So far, the team has uncovered more than 30 high-status mummies, buried in coloured cartonnage, 16 of which had gold tongues allowing them to speak in the afterlife. Other finds include papyri written in Greek, perfume bottles and stone blocks from a destroyed building that were decorated with images of plants, animals, and birds.
