• The gold bracelet of the Twenty-first Dynasty pharaoh Amenemope was recently stolen from the conservation laboratory of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Arrests were made but, sadly, the bracelet had already been melted down for gold.
• An ancient whistle made out of a cow’s toe bone has been discovered at Amarna. The first bone whistle to be found in Egypt, it is thought to have been used by a supervisor policing tomb workers.
• A collection of 577 antiquities from a wide range of periods has been seized by the Egyptian authorities following looting in the Zawiya Sultan area of Minya.
• A recent fire has destroyed the tourist café in the Valley of the Kings. There are now plans to build a new café closer to the entrance to the valley.

• Following its postponement in July, the new date for the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has been set for 1 November this year. The museum will be closed from 15 October to 4 November for final preparations.
