Archeoscan provides opportunities for public involvement in archaeology, including giving people the chance to participate in archaeological excavations at exciting sites in the Cotswolds area. They also assist communities in conducting geophysical surveys of sites of interest to them, and visit schools and colleges to provide hands-on experiences of archaeology.

People of all ages can participate in Archeoscan excavations.  No experience is required and they welcome beginners to the sites. All the necessary excavation equipment is provided.

Explore a ‘lost’ medieval manor in the Cotswolds

One of this year’s projects focuses on a fortified medieval manor, possibly dating to the 11th-15th centuries AD, whose remains Archeoscan have been exploring for the last three seasons. The buildings are well-appointed, witnessed by the recovery of moulded stonework that could be found in doorways and windows of a substantial medieval structure, and stone roof tiles. With walls 1.4m wide it is a very significant building and the evidence to-date suggests that it may be contemporary with the nearby Norman church. The buildings appear to be arranged around a courtyard with associated barns and stabling yet to be explored.

This year’s excavation on the site runs from 29 June to 17 July.

Excavate a Roman villa building in Gloucestershire

Archeoscan’s other project for 2025 focuses on a large Roman villa building with an associated aisled barn within a large enclosure, which lies within a larger Iron Age and Roman landscape. Pottery and small finds analysis to-date suggests that the main structures may date to the late 1st century to the mid-3rd century AD. For 2025, the team are continuing to uncover the remains of a possible bathhouse.

This year’s excavation runs in two sessions:
Session 1: 13 May to 5 June.
Session 2: 3 August to 28 August.

The cost of participating in either dig is £40.00/person/day (no meals or accommodation are provided, but this cost includes the hire of all equipment). Adults and children pay the same as numbers are limited on site, and each participant counts towards that number regardless of age.

Under-16s are welcome on site but must be accompanied by a fee-paying adult who will always assume responsibility for the supervision of the young person.
