Military History Matters 11

Description

In this issue:

– Invasion of the Third Reich. War veteran Patrick Delaforce’s account of the invasion of the Third Reich 1944-1945. In a series of sharp vignettes, Patrick captures the grim reality of the end-game for Hitler’s empire
– History of the British Army in 25 Battles – Steenkirk. Steenkirk may be little-known, but this gruelling infantry-battle on the edge of the Ardennes in 1692 was a dramatic continental debut for the reformed redcoat army created by Britain’s Glorious Revolution.
– Baedecker Blitz -The start of total war. The infamous Baedecker radids were Hitler’s deliberate bombing of five British cathedral cities in spring 1942. The raids marked a sharp escalation towards the total-war methods that would culminate in the holocausts of Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.
– Tirah, 1897. Antony Hornyold reassess the bitter, bloody, little-known conflict in North Pakistan. It was designed as a punitive expedition penetrating deep into ‘bandit country’, but it culminated in a heavily contested withdrawal that cost 500 soldiers their lives.
– Techno War: Aircraft Carrier. Keith Robinson describes the faltering experiments and improvements, beginning before the First World War, which were to culminate in a weapons-delivery system capable of revolutionising naval warfare.

Plus: news, reviews, museums, opinion columns, and much more!

From the Editor:
Our five main stories this month could not be more different. In Military Times, we aim to cover the whole range of military history – all arms, all periods, all human experience. We seem to have managed it well this issue.
Our cover story is the second part of war veteran and military historian Patrick Delaforce’s account of the invasion of the Third Reich. In a series of sharp vignettes, Patrick captures the grim reality of the end-game for Hitler’s empire.
The war described by Antony Hornyold in his article on the Tirah campaign of 1897 could hardly have been more different. One of Queen Victoria’s ‘little wars’ to suppress a revolt on India’s North-West Frontier, it was designed as a punitive expedition penetrating deep into ‘bandit country’, but it culminated in a heavily contested withdrawal that cost 500 soldiers their lives.
Keith Robinson continues his occasional series on the technology of war with the first of two articles on the aircraft carrier. He describes the faltering experiments and improvements, beginning before the First World War, which were to culminate in a weapons-delivery system capable of revolutionising naval warfare.
With a new TV documentary due to be broadcast by the Yesterday channel in August, we also have an article on the infamous ‘Baedeker Raids’ – Hitler’s deliberate bombing of five British cathedral cities in spring 1942. The raids marked a sharp escalation towards the total-war methods that would culminate in the holocausts of Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.
Finally, in collaboration with the National Army Museum, we continue our new series charting the history of the British Army in 25 battles. Steenkirk may be little-known, but this gruelling infantry-battle on the edge of the Ardennes in 1692 was a dramatic continental debut for the reformed redcoat army created by Britain’s Glorious Revolution.
