The year 2027 marks the 1,000th anniversary of the birth of William the Conqueror in Falaise, Normandy. To honour the occasion, the Normandy Region – in partnership with the UK and Ireland, the Channel Islands, Flanders, Norway, Denmark, and the six regions of southern Italy – has organised MILLENIUM, a year of celebrations of the Normans and their impact on the history of Europe.
The widely varied programme encompasses 660 projects so far, representing more than 1,000 events, from theatrical and musical performances and exhibitions and heritage tours to sports and culinary events, and more. Highlights include the launch show The Millennium Doors in February 2027 at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen; the creation of a monumental contemporary tapestry depicting the missing scene from the Bayeux Tapestry, which will be exhibited first at Westminster Abbey and then at the Château de Falaise in Normandy; a major touring show featuring outdoor arts performed in several towns across Normandy; an exhibition at the British Library exploring the impact of the Norman Conquest on England; the opening of a new Norman interpretation centre in Ireland; and a gathering of Viking ships across Normandy.
The goal of MILLENIUM is not only to celebrate this historic anniversary, but to bring Europe together around a shared heritage.
