Excavations on Wether Hill, Ingram, Northumberland 1994-2015

REVIEW BY CHRIS JONES

This important book is the product of 11 seasons of careful fieldwork by members of the Northumberland Archaeological Group. The book is structured around the five main areas of the project, beginning with the geoarchaeological survey and then the cross-ridge dyke, field system, beaker/food vessel pit and palisaded enclosures, round cairn, and the hillfort. Each chapter describes the feature, fieldwork methods, results obtained, and an interpretive discussion. There are individual chapters on the stone implement and pottery assemblages, before the final chapter attempts to bring all of this together in an interpretive discussion of the Wether Hill hillfort and its context.

This is a considerately written and beautifully illustrated book (I particularly like the use of drone imagery to give a sense of the scale of the features in the text), which is essential reading for all those interested in Cheviot hillforts and their landscapes.
