The city of Tenochtitlan, capital of the Mexica (Aztec) Empire, is believed to have been founded. The exact date of origin is uncertain, but 13 March AD 1325 was chosen in 1925 to commemorate the city’s 600th anniversary. According to legend, a small group of Mexica people travelled from their homeland of Aztlán to the Valley of Mexico in the first half of the 14th century, eventually arriving on an island in what was then Lake Texcoco. Here, they reportedly saw an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, which they interpreted as a sign from the god Huitzilopochtli to establish a new city on this spot. Over the next two centuries, the Mexica Empire grew in power and Tenochtitlan expanded into the largest city in the pre Columbian Americas. The city remained a centre of power and the religious heart of the empire until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors and the Fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521.

Mapping Doggerland
Archaeologists from the University of Bradford have created an interactive simulation charting the evolution and demise of Doggerland, a land bridge that connected Britain and mainland Europe until c.8,000 years ago. Developed as part of the ‘Unpath’d Waters’ project, the simulation was released with an animation showing how Doggerland changed from 20,000 years ago, at the height of the Last Glacial Maximum, to 5,000 years ago when the landscape was entirely submerged by the North Sea. The simulation can be explored here: https://zwack.itch.io/unpath-exhibition. Next, researchers are hoping that AI will be able to help them identify possible locations of prehistoric human settlements within this lost landscape.
