This is the most recent addition to the Jersey Heritage Research Series (see CA 434 for a review of The Chalcolithic and Bronze Age in Jersey and CA 431 for The Neolithic in Jersey), which aims to outline the current state of knowledge for each time period on the Channel Island and to identify areas where future research could be directed to have the greatest impact.
For the Iron Age and Roman period in Jersey, it had previously been assumed that there was little evidence, but a review of previous excavations has shown that the record is richer than anticipated, although still highly uneven and with a poorly understood chronology. It is this lack of clear chronology that Philip de Jersey identifies as the biggest challenge for future work on the island. Previous excavations need to be re-examined and compared with recent finds from the other Channel Islands and northern France, he argues, while future projects should focus not only on better understanding the small number of Iron Age sites currently identified on the island but also on the wider landscape, using various surveying techniques to help identify other places of interest from the period.
