This site report details excavations carried out by Oxford Archaeology ahead of the replacement of the gas transmission pipeline that crosses the Humber between Goxhill in North Lincolnshire and Paull in East Yorkshire. Palaeoenvironmental evidence sheds light on how this landscape evolved during the earlier and middle phases of the Holocene from both sides of the estuary, while the archaeological remains were mainly concentrated at Goxhill on the southern side.
In particular, the excavations revealed three distinct phases of Iron Age settlement. The first two were characterised by roundhouses, but during the third and final phase, in the early Roman period, the settlement appears to have grown and expanded. Roundhouses gave way to more rectilinear buildings, reflecting a broader shift in architectural traditions commonly associated with the ‘Romanisation’ of rural communities.
Overall, this detailed report provides a wonderful snapshot of what life was like along the Humber 2,000 years ago.
