Documenting Activism, Creating Change: archaeology and the legacy of #MeToo

This volume discusses the changes that have occurred in the realm of archaeology in the wake of the #MeToo movement, acknowledging the discrimination and harassment that women have continued to face despite living in what is considered a post-feminist society. Through a series of papers, it documents efforts in countries all over the world to make archaeology a more egalitarian and inclusive space, particularly through the use of social medial and other digital platforms.

As the world moves beyond #MeToo, however – and in many cases is backsliding into more misogynistic behaviour with the advent of the ‘manosphere’ – perhaps this volume has already become outdated. It would be interesting to see if a follow-up book found that these changes have endured. I also think the book missed the opportunity to use archaeology as a lens through which to analyse the #MeToo movement and assess how similar (although obviously non-digital) efforts may have played out in previous cultures and time periods.
