DigVentures is exploring the lost history of Lindisfarne, an important religious centre established by the Kings of Northumbria during the 7th-century. Lindisfarne is the site where where monks created the Lindisfarne Gospels, and where skilled artisans forged the treasures that adorned the altars of early Medieval Europe. During the 8th, 9th, and 10th-centuries, a series of devastating raids by Viking groups resulted in the early medieval monastery being left to ruin, its original location lost to time.
The Finds Room plays an important role on any dig, making sure that the artefacts which are excavated are treated with care, and are properly sorted, conserved, and identified. It’s the ideal place to be for anyone interested in archaeology, who has an eye for detail and likes examining things up close.
Participants will be able to gain comprehensive experience in the full range of skills, knowledge and techniques that the finds team uses on-site. DigVentures will provide the opportunity to gain top-notch skills, while helping to conserve the incredible artefacts that emerge from the trenches, unravel their stories, and make sense of it all.
Join DigVentures and begin to piece together the evidence that the dig team unearth, and walk away with the skills and knowledge used by the Finds Team alongside a dig.
Volunteers from age 17 and upwards are welcome to take part and help to discover the archaeology of Lindisfarne.
